The ECF, or Exploratory Crews of the Federation, is a canon Star Trek simming group. Any questions you have may be directed to any of our members or the ECF Admiralty. Most questions can be answered on the ECF FAQ Page.

*Please note* None of our ships have any official posts in the Marine, Fighter areas. All new members will start at the rank of Cadet.
Current ECF members please note that all new characters start as a Cadet per regulations regardless of current character status.
Though there is a fair amount of red text please take the time and read it, it is provided for the benefit of long standing members and new ones.
All members are asked to create a character for themselves. These characters should be original and not a preexisting character such as Captain James T. Kirk, Spock, Lieutenant Worf, etc.

The ECF will not accept Androids, Borg, Q, Immortal/Omnipotent beings, Anime races/characters, Star Wars races/characters, Species 8472, and Changelings or race combination's containing any of the above.

Psionic abilities such as telekinesis (ability to move objects) and pyrokenesis (ability to create or control fire) will be rejected. Members wishing to have telepathic and empathic abilities may do so providing their race is known to have these talents.


The ECF Admiralty reserves the right to reject any species not aforementioned. Including any of mixed heritage, Romulan/Vulcan, Klingon/Human, etc. Such individuals are considered rare.


The ECF Admiralty also reserves the right to make further inquiries regarding a questionable species/character before a member is accepted. New races/species are encouraged but they must fit within the Star Trek universe.

- Duty Officer: A permanent non-civilian character on a ship that can fill in a ship's need for unusual posts such as astrometrics, stellar cartography, morale officer, etc. Unlike the VS, this person maintains the same character no matter where the CO has them in use.

- Versatile Specialist: The versatile specialist post is designed to fill the gaps of a sim. A VS may be used to portray a character that is not part of the regular crew; such as an alien, a captain of a different ship, Q, etc. The VS may also be used by a captain to fill in an open basic post.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND ACCEPTANCE OF ECF DIRECTIVES AND AOL's TERMS OF SERVICE
The Exploratory Crews of the Federation (ECF) is operated under the ECF Directives and AOL's Terms Of Service contained in this document (referred to as "TOS"). By completing the ECF application, and/or by the use of this site as well as all ECF chat rooms and the ECF Forum, you are indicating your agreement to be bound by all of the terms and conditions set forth below.





ECF DIRECTIVES

The ECF, or Exploratory Crews of the Federation, is a canon Star Trek simulations group. Any questions you have may be directed to any of our members or the ECF Admiralty. Most questions can be answered on the ECF FAQ Page. Please note that none of our ships have any official posts in the marine, fighter, or civilian areas.

ECF Prime Directive:


To uphold and maintain simulations that reflect the ideals, morality and technology of the Star Trek world that was created by The Great Bird of the Galaxy himself, Gene Roddenberry. Above all else, our goal is to have fun! Lots of fun, that's what simming is all about!

ECF Directive #1:
No ECF member shall provoke, participate in, insult or manipulate a hostile intent upon another simulation group or any member, including fellow ECF members. It is the responsibility of every ECF member who witnesses such an occurrence to notify the entire admiralty staff immediately.

ECF Directive #2:
No ECF member shall invite anyone outside of the ECF into the sim room to sim or observe, unless permission is granted by the captain or commanding officer prior to the onset of the scheduled sim.
ECF Directive #3:
A) Any ECF member arriving late to a sim after it has started will more than likely have their post temporarily assigned to another member during that sim only, and will resume their assigned posts on the following week. (see Directive # 5 Section A) The late arrival is to pay attention to what is taking place in the sim until (s)he receives a captain's log (mission briefing) and is assigned a post by the captain or executive officer.
B) The captain/commandig officer has the privilege to postpone the sim for up to, but not to exceed 15 minutes beyond the sims scheduled start time, if (s)he is lacking members. It is the responsibility of the captain/commandig officer to inform his/her crew of any such postponement.

C ) The captain/commandig officer has the privilege to contact any available (online) ECF member and request said member(s) to help fill an empty post(s) or act as an additional sim character such as a Romulan or planetary native, etc. The contacted member has the option to accept or decline the offer.

ECF Directive #4:
When an officer who has a key role or post must leave in the middle of a sim, that role/post will be assigned to another. If said officer returns shortly thereafter, (s)he will be assigned a different role/post to avoid confusion. This does not apply to members who have been bumped offline and return immediately.

ECF Directive #5:
A) In the event of a multiple part sim, a crew member who temporarily filled a post that was not his/her assigned post has the option to continue in that post for the follow-up sim(s). An example of this is: The chief science officer (CSCI) is absent from the sim. The assistant science officer (ASCI) was given CSCI for said sim. ASCI may continue in that role until said sim has reached the final conclusion of all parts.
B) Crew members who attend a second part of any sim without attending the first part are encouraged to read the (part one) sim log and will be given a temporary post upon arrival by the executive officer. Said officer will assume their regular assigned post after the multi part sim has reached its conclusion.

ECF Directive #6:
While any ECF member may observe any ECF sim, unless they are part of that ships crew or have been invited to participate by the captain/commandig officer, shall remain quiet and observe only.
ECF Directive #7:
A) Any ECF member who misses two consecutive scheduled sims without giving prior notice to their captain runs the risk of being reduced in rank accordingly.
B) It is the responsibility of each captain to file a report to the entire admiralty staff after each sim stating which officers were in attendance, which officers sent in a notice of absence and which officers were not in attendance and sent no notice. Any notices received after a sim should be forwarded to the entire admiralty staff.

C ) It is also the responsibility of each captain to file a report on any ECF member of his/her crew, who has missed two consecutive scheduled sims without giving prior notice. Any reports shall be sent to the entire admiralty staff.

ECF Directive #8:
A) Any ECF member/character, who misses three consecutive scheduled sims without giving prior notice to their captain will be sent a notice stating their ECF membership is in jeopardy. If no response is given, said member/character will be stripped of rank and generally discharged from the ECF simulations group. At which time, that individual may reapply for membership within the ECF, and if accepted, shall be reinstated at the rank of cadet.
B) It is the responsibility of each captain to file a report on any ECF member of his/her crew, who has missed 3 consecutive sims without giving prior notice. Any reports shall be sent to the entire admiralty staff.

ECF Directive #9:
A) Before any member may be assigned as a permanent executive officer (XO), they will be given a list of duties that they must first learn and understand. Once this is achieved, the prospective XO will be given several training sessions aboard the USS Eclipse and a final written test to determine if the prospective XO is capable of fulfilling his/her duties as an executive officer.
B) Once an ECF member has been approved and has been granted the post of XO, said member is expected to fulfill the obligations and duties set forth below;


B1) At the discretion of the captain, an XO may be called upon to organize the crew and prepare for the mission as well as perform other command staff duties. All XO's should be able to generate a SCORE.
B2) In the event that the captain cannot attend a mission or must take a leave of absence (LOA), it is the responsibility and obligation of the XO to assume temporary command (TCO) and host said mission(s) until the CO returns. Every XO should have a mission prepared and placed in reserve for last minute emergencies.

B3) Should the captain not return from LOA after 90 days, ECF Directive #10 Section B shall apply.


C ) It is the responsibility of all executive officers to perform their duties to the best of their abilities. Should an XO be incapable of performing the aforementioned duties, they risk losing said post and will be returned to standard crew compliment.

ECF Directive #10:
A) ECF members may take a LOA (Leave of Absence) at any time. At the discretion of the captain. Any crew member who is on leave after 30 days or 4 missions will forfeit their post. Any crew member whose LOA is intended or expected to exceed 90 days must notify the admiralty and their captain in order for an extension to be placed into effect. In the event of a LOA exceeding 90 days, said member shall be placed on an inactive list.
B) Should a CO (captain) take a LOA, the XO (executive officer) shall assume TCO (temporary commanding officer) status until the CO returns. Should the CO's LOA exceed 90 days, the CO will forfeit their command and the TCO shall be offered the post of CO on a permanent basis. Said CO on LOA shall then become a FCO (floating commanding officer) upon returning and will be posted where needed until such a time as another vessel becomes available for command.

C ) All ECF members shall notify the entire admiralty staff and their CO prior to taking a LOA as well as requesting any extension of leave. If no notification has been presented, said member may jeopardize their membership in the ECF. (See ECF Directive #8)

ECF Directive #11:
No current ECF member shall be allowed to "create" a ship or personal craft for sim purposes within the ECF until said member reaches the rank of captain. After this time, any proposal is to be brought to the entire admiralty staff as well as the members previous captain for approval.

ECF Directive #12:
A) Any ECF member who wishes to sim on more than one ECF ship must create a separate character for each individual ship. And, if possible, create a new SN for each character. Member will begin as a cadet on said ship. Member may use the same SN on all ships but must submit a request for a secondary post and include a new character name and profile form to the entire admiralty staff.
B) All new characters should have a profile submitted for the ECF web site. A history is not required, however, basic information is. Profiles are to be done in keeping with SF tradition. They should appear believable and not be taken lightly or as a joke. All ECF characters must be Starfleet Academy graduates.

C ) All ECF members are asked to create a character for themselves. These characters should be original and not a preexisting character such as Captain James T. Kirk or Lieutenant Worf, etc.

ECF Directive #13:
A) Captains of ECF ships shall keep their rosters updated (they may pass this duty on to their executive officers) and inform the entire admiralty staff of any changes in a timely manner. Sim cancellations or sim day/time changes shall likewise be sent in a timely manner. It is the responsibility of every captain/XO to send regularly updated ships rosters via email to each member of their crew as well as to the entire admiralty staff.
B) Each ECF captain must send a welcome letter to a new recruit/transferee. The letter shall contain ship and crew information, sim times and the sim room link. A copy of this letter must be sent to the entire admiralty staff.

C ) Captains shall keep the entire admiralty staff and their crew apprised of new recruit/transferee placement and post/rank/SN changes for their crew as soon as the information becomes available to them.

D) All new recruits must be immediately added to a CO's SCORE whether or not they attend the mission. If a new recruit does not attend a scheduled mission, Directive #8 will apply.

ECF Directive #14:
A) All ECF members wishing to create any screen names for use while simming in any ECF sim room must first register their SN's prior to using them. This includes temporary screen names used to portray outside characters and additional screen names used for any other in-room purposes.
B) Members who have IC children aboard ECF vessels are not permitted to sim said children as active members unless the child is over 18 years of age and has formally applied to the ECF. IC children may be simmed on their home ship when the parent member is present and only when the storyline allows for a child presence (i.e.,: shoreleave, free sim). This directive also applies to member pets.

D) All ECF members shall keep their captains and the entire admiralty staff updated on any screen name changes. AIM users shall notify their captains and the entire admiralty staff of the simming screen name they will use within the ECF once they have received their acceptance notice.

ECF Directive #15:
A) All ECF captains shall use the ECF standard when writing a mission briefing. All briefings shall consist of an imbedded image pertaining to the mission/episode, an episode title and number, the stardate, (can also use "supplemental") the author of said episode, the captain's log and a FOOT NOTE: (To be used at the captain's discretion)
B) Any ECF member may write a sim/mission briefing(s) but must submit them to their captain in advance of the scheduled sim. It is the responsibility of the captain to adhere to section A of Directive #15 upon receiving/using any submission(s), and to inform any member(s) who have submitted a sim/mission briefing when their submitted mission will be scheduled for simming. The captain will give writing credits to the ECF member who is the author of the sim within the mission briefing.

ECF Directive #16:
Each ECF ship captain is responsible for submitting a weekly SCORE to the entire admiralty staff within 72 hours of their last mission. The SCORE should also include the sim mission briefing at the bottom and an attached sim log. In some cases, captains will be advised on promotions according to their ship logs and SCORE's.
ECF Directive # 17:
During a sim, crew members will not engage the captain in IM conversation due to the multiple tasks your captain may be undertaking. Only the XO and the VS reserves the right to IM the captain. If you require assistance or become confused, you are directed to IM your chief of department (C of D). If the C of D cannot resolve the issue, you are directed to IM your XO. The XO will forward your IM to the captain if (s)he cannot resolve the issue. Any questions or comments that do not directly bear on the sim, should wait until the sim has ended or be sent via email.

ECF Directive # 18:
Font colors Red and Blue are reserved for the captain's use only during a scheduled sim. All ACTIONS and ATTENTION statements will be done in red as it is a color that stands out well. The captain shall use blue for his/her character.

ECF Directive # 19:
While simming, "mun bubbles" shall be kept to necessary information only. Examples of this are ((I have to go, sorry)), ((I missed that part, am I on the AT?)). All non sequitor comments such as ((My favorite band is jamming on the radio!)), ((ST Enterprise is on TV!)), etc., shall be refrained from as it can disrupt the momentum of the sim.

ECF Directive #20:
A) Simming should be taken seriously. Any member whose character fails to behave in a manner becoming a Starfleet officer during a sim risks expulsion from the ECF.
B) The use of profanity and vulgarity of any nature is strictly prohibited within all ECF chat rooms. Respect for fellow members shall be considered at all times. The ECF is in full compliance with AOL's TOS (terms of service). For details, see: Appropriate Online Content

ECF Directive #21:
A) All ECF publications (i.e., the WEEKLY, individual ships' newsletters) will be in full compliance with all ECF Directives as well as AOL's Terms of Service. Profanity, plagiarism and sexual innuendoes of any kind are prohibited within all ECF publications. ECF members shall not use any ECF material, text or images outside of the ECF domain. The admiralty reserves the right to determine what constitutes profanity, innuendo and plagiarism should such a question arise.
B) All ECF journalists must include the entire admiralty staff mailstring when submitting any publications meant for distribution within the ECF simulations group. Admiralty approval must be given before any publications are distributed among ECF members.


ECF Directive #22:
A) When an ECF member creates a room specifically for recruiting purposes, (s)he shall use the STARTREK ECF RECRUIT room. This room is to be used solely for ECF recruiting.
B) While recruiting, members are to conduct themselves in a manner becoming a Starfleet officer. Recruit "room owners" are expected to act responsibly. Abuse and misuse of the "room owner" feature will be met with an instant demotion and possible expulsion from the ECF. Weapons are not permitted in the ECF recruit room. Recruiting is done for the ECF as a whole and not individual ships. New recruits will be placed on the ship that best fits the new recruit's schedule. If a new recruit indicates (s)he is available at any time, (s)he will be placed on the ship with the smallest crew compliment.

C ) Within ECF chatrooms, the CO shall be the "room owner" unless they pass the responsibility to a different crew member. Should someone other than the CO be selected as "room owner," they are not permitted to eject people or close out the chatroom without the CO's permission. Acting without CO permission or failure to hand over the "room ownership" to the CO will result in an automatic demotion.

ECF Directive #23:
A) Promotions are given at the discretion of the captain and the ECF admiralty. Promotions are to be given fairly to all ECF members who have earned them. ECF members can only be promoted by the captain of the ship they are assigned to or by any member of the ECF admiralty. The primary qualifications for promotions are: Good sim attendance and sim participation.
B) Promotions shall follow ranking order at all times. The skipping of ranks is not permissible within the ECF. All new members must attend 4 missions before receiving their first promotion to the rank of yeoman.

ECF Directive #24:
A biography for any new member shall not be placed in the ECF web site until their character has simmed with his/her primary ship for four missions. All officers holding the rank of ensign or higher should have a basic profile placed in the ECF web site.

ECF Directive #25:
A) No ECF member shall use the ECF mailstring for the purpose of voicing their personal political views and opinions or the generation of "spam" mail. Any member doing so, will be reprimanded. The ECF mailstring is to be used only by the ECF admiralty and only for ECF memos, reminders, notices, the ECF WEEKLY and official ECF business. Individual ship mailstrings may be used by crew members to impart ECF related information only.
B) If mail that is considered spam is circulated within the ECF mailstring, any responses or opinions shall be sent only to the entire admiralty staff. Responses shall not be sent to the entire ECF mailstring. Courtesy and respect for privacy within the ECF must be maintained at all times.

C ) All correspondence related to grievances, ECF policies, procedures and operations shall be directed to the entire admiralty staff only.

ECF Directive #26:
The admiralty reserves the right to incorporate any new directives and/or updates to existing directives with the goal of preventing any new and unforeseen occurrences that may adversely effect the ECF and ECF members.


A breach of any of these directives by any ECF member will be met with directive reminders or appropriate reprimands accordingly, such as: probationary time periods, rank reductions or discharge from the ECF Simulations Group.
